while working with together you can expect to explore what it means to intentionally work through challenges, barriers, and self-limitations while understanding how areas of your life have been, and continue to be impacted.

what is peer support?

peer support is an approach used to increase overall wellness while promoting self-esteem, resiliency, and self-advocacy. peer support acknowledges the importance of using strength-based language and person-centered interventions to build trust and mutuality. specialists are trained according to state and national certification standards.

what’s the difference between peer services and mental health counseling?

licensed mental health professionals are regulated and required to complete training in accordance with state laws and the council for accreditation of counseling and related programs (CACREP), which includes approved educational training and examination. a licensed mental health professional is not always a peer support specialist.

peer support specialists utilize lived experiences to provide services and complete certification via approved state training programs. peer support specialists come from various walks of life and therefore can also be a licensed mental health professional or hold other certifications and licenses in addition to peer certification.

if i’m working with a peer does that mean i don’t need to see a mental health counselor or other clinical professional?

if you have any prior diagnoses or concerns about your mental wellness it’s always good to talk to a licensed professional. working with a peer is not a substitute for mental health counseling. in some cases, working with a peer and licensed professional can produce higher life satisfaction.

how much does it cost?

A.P. offers peer support services for $30 an hour as follows:

  • monthly: minimum of two (2) meetings a month for a total four (4) hours

  • weekly: minimum of one (1) meeting a week for a total of one (1) hour

*because we do not store your payment information, payment is due no less than 24 hours before each meeting

the possibility of bartering services can be discussed during consultation

is working with a peer right for me?

working with can be a beneficial experience due to the incorporation of therapeutic techniques and foundation of reciprocity and support via shared experiences, however no two people are alike.
